Kelly Carpenter is truly the brains behind this musical adventure known as the StoneKings. She has a warm loving personality upon first meeting her, but she can certainly crack the whip and get things done when its time to get down to business, and this is why all of the band members affectionately call her "The Boss".
Carpenter's story is an interesting one. It begins nearly 20 years ago when she left home after becoming "Miss Kansas 1984". She packed up her crown and the money she won in the pageant and headed for a new life in the big city of Chicago. It was in Chicago that she first joined the traveling circus. Carpenter traveled for nearly 4 years with that circus selling cotton candy and cleaning horse stalls. She loved everything about working with horses, and soon became very knowledgable about riding, breeding and desensatizing them. The money she had saved while working for the circus and desensatizing horses on the side, helped pay her way though college. It was in college that Miss Carpenter found her true passion in life.... illegal drugs and death metal music. She played in many bands around this time but was best known as a songwriter. Few people know how many great songs she wrote during this time that were later recorded by other artists, such as "Achey Breakey Heart" (Billy Ray Cyrus), "MMM Bop" (Hansen), and "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mamma" (Frank Zappa). After earning her degree in music business, Carpenter set out to manage a "supergroup" of her own. After several failed attempts to manage existing "supergroups", she decided it was time to form one of her own. Carpenter immediately contacted Paula Abdul and Simon, from the hit TV show American Idol. She asked them to give her the best musicians they had, but Simon wouldn't think of it. "I'll tell you what you can have. I have four rejects out back that didn't quilify for my show American Idol, and they are aimlessly walking around trying to find a bus back to Texas", Simon replied. "They aren't bad musicians, but i had to kick them off the show because they had too much gear to fit on the stage" He said. Carpenter took those four rejects and in five short weeks she whipped those boys in the high energy, hard rockin', thong catching, head banging, Texas tone monsters you see today. Without Kelly Carpenter the StoneKings would not be where they are today. She continually works with the band to improve its performance and showmanship. In her spare time she still enjoys listening to death metal music, desensatizing horses, and fighting for the legalization of marijuana. |
